Dolomites and South Tyrol is a dream Destination for getting married

If you’ve come across this post, chances are you’re considering getting married in South Tyrol or you’re looking for a wedding photographer in the region. Either way, you’ve already found one 😉 Feel free to explore my work here on my homepage and see for yourself.

You’ll also find a beautiful venue recommendation as well as helpful tips on how your ceremony and photo session can unfold.

If you’ve ever been to the Dolomites, right at the border between Germany, Austria, and Italy, you’ll know there’s something truly magical about this place. I’ve spent one of my most memorable holidays there. But since my work as a destination wedding photographer is always on my mind and I’d happily spend every free second behind the camera, I naturally experience South Tyrol through the eyes of a wedding photographer. And let’s be honest: every few meters you’ll find a breathtaking backdrop for couple portraits. The mountains are simply stunning and make every wedding photo feel truly special.

That’s exactly why being a wedding photographer in South Tyrol feels like a dream job to me. My work has taken me all across Europe - Mallorca, mainland Spain, various regions in Italy, Portugal, Greece and even beyond, like the Seychelles. But South Tyrol is something else entirely.

I’ve taken a closer look at the topic and want to share some insights with you if you’re thinking about getting married in South Tyrol. I’d also love to recommend a very special wedding venue. Not only do I know the owner personally, I’ve completely fallen in love with this place. And once you see the images below, I’m sure Schloss Freudenstein will capture your heart as well.

Schloss Freudenstein near Bolzano truly captivated me. And once you take in the breathtaking views and the beautiful orangery, you’ll feel the same. Karoline, the owner, is such a warm and genuine person, and I’m always happy about every inquiry I receive for this venue, also because it means I get to see her again.

Is it possible to get married in South Tyrol as a German citizen?

You can get married in Italy without any issues. For example, the marriage is legally recognized in Germany. You can obtain all necessary information from your local registry office, where they will also provide you with the required documents to make your marriage legally valid.

However, based on my experience photographing weddings abroad, most couples prefer to have a symbolic ceremony at their destination and take care of the legal civil ceremony in their own country. While the bureaucratic process in Italy is manageable, it’s often more romantic to exchange vows at your dream location, perhaps overlooking a valley or surrounded by a mountain panorama. Just like in Germany, you can’t legally marry anywhere you like. The ceremony must be conducted by an official registrar and is usually tied to specific locations.

Can we take photos in the mountains even if our venue isn’t located there?

This is a very common and understandable question, and the answer is: yes.

We can absolutely plan your couple session in the mountains or with a mountain backdrop. As part of your wedding planning, we’ll look at where your venue is located in South Tyrol and the Dolomites and decide whether the surrounding scenery already offers that alpine feel or if we should travel to a different spot.

If we do need to drive, we’ll discuss whether you’d like to do that on your wedding day. But it’s not a must. Many couples getting married in South Tyrol plan a full wedding weekend and stay for a few extra days. In that case, we can easily schedule an pre- wedding or after-wedding shoot at your dream location and allow for a bit more travel time without any pressure.
